Chant and Acoustics in a Traditional Church Structure

  1. This is Nelly Gasparyan, an Armenian woman singing a prayer in an abandoned cathedral in Eastern Turkey. The song is ‘Lord have mercy’. The Church of the Holy Cross, is located on the island of Akdamar in Lake Van, Eastern Turkey; it was built as a part of a palace and religious complex between 915 and 921 under the direction of King Gagik Ardzruni. In an age of electronic music using microphones, speakers, and even auto tune devices to enhance the voice, this woman’s natural vocals accompanied by the surrounding acoustics of the location create an incomparable sound.
